What to consider before buying a Metalian Tent

At Metalian, we don’t believe that there will ever be a tent that can be, or do, anything and everything. But we do believe in designing products that are perfect for your dream camping set up that can keep you safe, sheltered and dry. This article is your go-to guide to figuring out which Metalian tent could be perfect for you.

First things first; here’s what we offer.

We offer two main tent options.

  • Softshell: Our soft-shell tents are a traditional canvas tent installed on top of the trailer.

  • Hardshell: The hardshell tent is a tent with a hard-lid which offers a quicker set up and comes with additional options for add-ons. For example; our 270° awning can only be installed on the lid of the hardshell tent. We also offer a wall set for the hard-shell tent.

  • We offer extras for our tents like awnings, annex rooms, and some custom storage. It’s best to speak to our sales representatives about what you possibly want out of your Metalian tent.

  • Depending on what you want, you might not even need this type of tent set up. Your trailer is supposed to function as gear storage and a base for your camping set up. With our tents, you can get the full overlanding experience

  • Already have a trailer and just want us to fit a tent into your set up? No problem! We can fit a Metalain tent onto a different trailer or car.

What We Do Best

  • Our design philosophy means that we prioritize having a highly integrated & modular setup. While our tents are designed inhouse to fit our trailers, we do not shy away from making our tents work for any set up potential customers could have in mind. Don’t have a Metalian trailer and you want a Metalian tent? Give us a call.

  • We offer tents with flexible configurations. While we tend to cater more to the 4X4 and off-grid camping market, that doesn’t mean you can’t build a setup that matches your style: From lightweight weekend trips all the way to “home-away-from-home” style overlanding, we have you covered.

  • Our tents are durable and rugged. Designed for rough terrain we use high quality materials to make our tents; Ripstop fabric from Riptech™, flat felled seams, genuine velcro and YKK Zippers all feature in our designs.

  • The roof top tents are convenient & space-efficient. Instead of carrying a ground-tent and sleeping gear separately, the roof top tent provides a more compact, organised and efficient way to travel. Which is ideal for overlanding or remote campsites, but it’s also great for big families. Extra space in the boot means there’s extra room for everyone’s bags, boardgames, or even souvenirs you bought along the way.

What to consider:

So. You’re interested in a tent and you’re thinking a little more seriously about putting that deposit down. Because Metalian trailers are modular and highly customisable, here are some of the things you should consider before you place your order.

  • What you want. We quote per item added to your sales order, so it’s important that you tell us exactly what you want. Not entirely sure? That’s okay! Chat to our sales team and we can advise you accordingly.

  • Setup & takedown: While our hardshell tent goes up faster, the full setup (a tent with an annex room or an awning) will still require effort to set up. It’s not as instant as staying in a campervan, but it is much easier than setting up a tent and trailer from scratch.

  • Weight & balance matters: When you add a rooftop tent and any extra gear (a kitchen, a fridge, water, ect), the weight distribution, centre of gravity, towing capability all matter. Weight distribution becomes more critical when on rough gravel or in off-road conditions. Always check the GVM and your vehicle's Tow rating.

  • Lead-time & delivery/fitment time. Our tents, like our trailers, are made to order by our exceptionally talented production team. They are bespoke products, designed well and with the intention of lasting a long time. Good things take time, so you should expect a turnaround time of 5 to 8 weeks. The more custom you want your tent set up to be, the more patient you’ll have to be.

  • Cost: A fully kitted-out tent with extras can become a premium setup. The trade-off is comfort, durability and convenience.
